At American Flooring Distributors, we have access to some of the most prestigious carpet mills such as Mohawk's WundaWeve and Horizon, Shaw's Tuftex and Couture. American Flooring Distributors also has access to independent carpet mills Gulistan and Royalty.

The fiber used in a carpet can largely determine the extent of the carpet’s wearability and stain resistance. Carpet is available in 5 basic fibers: SmartStrand (Triexta) Nylon, Wool, Polyester or P.E.T., and Polypropylene (Olefin). The determination as to which fiber to choose depends largely on the type of environment in which the carpet will be used and on the customer’s budget.

So, which fibers do what? Wool carpets are warm and durable. However, they can be easily damaged by alkaline cleaning detergents, are available in fewer shades and are expensive. SmartStrand is the newest fiber. SmartStrand has the durability of Nylon and the stain resistance of PET. Nylon, particularly type 6,6, is a very durable fiber. Nylons are soft, colorful, fairly resistant to most food and beverage stains and easy to clean. Polyester is highly stain resistant, reasonably durable and available in a myriad of colors. However, polyesters lack the soft texture of wools or nylons. Polypropylene carpets are moisture resistant therefore making them highly stain resistant. Unfortunately though, they lack resiliency, can feel coarse and are limited in color.

Once you have chosen which carpet fiber you need the next step is to select the best carpet style for your room. Aside from color, it is important to also consider the carpet’s twist and density. These as factors that will enhance the overall appearance the carpet lends to your room. The following definitions should make that selection process a little less complicated.

Types of Carpet

  • Loop: In order to minimize crushing and matting loop carpets are made into a continuous uncut surface. Berber fleck carpets wear well and are suited for virtually any room.
  • Cut: The tops of the carpet loop are cut to expose the yarn ends. Cut piles carpets are available in a variety of styles to flatter and room. Choose textured carpet to better hide footprints because of their vibrant colors. Choose saxony carpets for a richer more elegant look.
  • Frieze: Frieze carpet tufts are tightly twisted giving the carpet greater resiliency. Friezes tend to better hide vacuum marks and footprints making them well suited for family rooms, foyers and kid’s rooms.
  • Cut & Loop: Cut and loop carpets, sometimes called cut/uncut, usually have a distinct pattern in which cut and uncut loops are combined. Depending on the pattern, these carpets can appear very formal and elegant making them a smart choice for a formal dining area or living room.
